Happy Danes

Just finished reading this article about why people in Denmark are the happiest folks in Europe.

Asked to rate both their happiness and long-term life satisfaction, Danish people trounce their European cousins.

The article then goes on to talk about how they have high taxes, but they trust their government officials, have free health care, good education and have no pressure to work overtime.

But I think this really sums it up:

"Year after year we're just happy that things didn't go as badly as we'd feared."

Hi Amy--I got a kick out of the quote you included "...things didn't go as bad as we feared..." both my maternal and paternal grandparents immigrated from Denmark around 1900, so I'm 100%--I was born in 1944, while aunts, uncles and grandparents still talked Danish when they didn't want us to understand. What drew me to your post as well was the phrase "Happy Danes"....in NE Montana where I grew up, it was well known that those who were called "Happy Danes" were the ones who imbibed freely of the stronger spirits...and they would have been imbibing during the hard homesteading years, so everybody in the community knew who they were--their haystacks weren't straight and their cows weren't always milked on time--I still think that the reason they called them Happy Danes was because they simply couldn't bear to say anything negative about anything--so it was a "nice way" to identify the drinkers!! Another saying that my grandparents and parents used to the point of exhaustion was "Next year will be better"!!!! And that was a valuable position to take in NE Montana where the rainfall was slim and sporadic and where crops often failed. Had to hang on to something!!
