classic. Here are some of the 50 that really jumped out at me:
You can't kill yourself by holding your breath
In 1386, a pig in France was executed by public hanging for the murder of a child
The placement of a donkey's eyes in its' heads enables it to see all four feet at all times
It's against the law to burp, or sneeze in a church in Nebraska, USA
The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds
Slugs have 4 noses
We're number one!
It's official! This is the wettest November ever in Seattle!
Whew. I'm exhausted just thinking about it. According to the Seattle Times, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport reported a monthly total of 15.37 inches late Wednesday, breaking the record of 15.33 inches recorded at the Federal Building in 1933.
But let's not stop there: At 4 a.m. Wednesday, the temperature at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport plunged to 18 degrees, breaking a 31-year-old record of 22 degrees, making it the coldest Nov. 29 in Seattle history.
It's tiring breaking records....

Snow update

It's supposed to snow again tomorrow. I like it cause it's pretty, but the snow is causing major problems around here. The whole Puget Sound area is pretty much shut down (from what my tv tells me anyways....it's not like I'm going out there on the roads).
See, it rarely snows here. Maybe once a year. So, the towns and cities don't have snowplows or salt or anything for the roads. And the folks apparently think that the way that you drive in the snow is to ride the brake and slide sideways. It's a bit scary. I know, they just don't have experience with driving in the snow. It would be like asking me to drive a horse. Or whatever.
It warmed up a bit today and the roads were better cause the ice melted, but now it's back in the 20's (very cold for this part of the country), so it's all freezing again. And, it's supposed to snow again tomorrow, so that means snow on top of ice. Not a good combo at all. I'm thinking I'll "run" to work (the long way, avoiding that hill that caused me such problems last night), grab my laptop and come back home and work from here. I don't want to drive an hour to get home again (remember, I live 1.6 miles from campus).
Gus and I took a walk and I took some pictures. This picture is my street (pretty, eh?). I'll try and post some more tomorrow.
Bobby (the movie)
Warning: This is not a movie about Bobby Kennedy. It is primarily a movie about what the US was like at the time Bobby Kennedy was killed. That being said, there are a bunch of clips about RFK talking about issues that (unfortunately) still unaddressed today.
I saw this movie while in NY last week. My mom and I liked it and my stepfather didn't cause he thought it would be about RFK, so he was disappointed.
It's set against the background of the day that RFK was shot. There are a zillion stars in it, which can be distracting (okay, that's Harry Belafonte, right?) but I thought that Emilio did a really good job of illustrating the political, social and emotional scene at that point in time through a bunch of people's lives.
Politically, I found it rather moving. See, I really really want a candidate for president that excites and motivates me. I want someone who inspires me to be a better person, a better American. Maybe it's just cause I only see clips but JFK and RFK seemed to really do that to people. John Edwards gave me a little pinch of it last time. I want to be asked to do my part to make this a better country and a better world. This president asked us to shop to defeat the terrorists. I just don't find that inspiring.
Anyways, I found the movie interesting and moving. I was definitely choked up at the end and it had me thinking when I left. I give it 3.5 Amys.

Snow day!
We have a snow day from work! They have closed down campus. Having lived in Southern California for the past 14 years (before I moved here about 18 months ago), it's been a really really long time since I had a snow day. I feel like a little kid....I may go into my backyard and make snow angels...
Where I live, there isn't much snow (a couple of inches, maybe), but it's super-icy. I live less than 2 miles from work and it took me more than an hour to get home last night (at 7:15 when I thought most people would already be home). Largely cause I went my regular route which includes going down a very long and steep hill. Dopey. And, to boot, my car has rear wheel drive, so it was fishtailing and sliding. Having grown up in the northeast, I knew how to straighten it back out, but it sure gets your heart beating fast. Cars were abandoned all over the place.
Got home, took Gus into the backyard and I threw snowballs at him, which he tried to catch. He couldn't figure out what was happening to them, which amused me (and hopefully him). Having grown up in LA, he's still a little mystified by snow. He's experienced it before (in Hartford and Aspen - now there's a city combo you don't see often), but he hasn't quite worked it out yet.
So, I'm going to try to enjoy my snow day by taking Gus for a long walk...let it snow, let it snow, let it snowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww......

Connecticut
So, I'm at my dad's house in Connecticut for a few days before I head down to my mom's in NY for Thanksgiving. It's been a nice opportunity to see some of my family and friends and relax. You have to be careful at my dad's house though....my stepmother doesn't believe in food expiration dates. Apparently, in her universe, food never goes bad - or she's growing her own penicillin or something. You have to carefully examine everything before you put it in your mouth, which comes to you quite naturally after you eat a spoiled piece of cheese once (that was several years ago...)
The good news is that my stepmother always has Mallomars at Thanksgiving time. They're only available in the fall and winter because they melt in the heat. I just opened a box and ate a couple. Yum.

Based on his background, what job do you think President Bush gave this man today?
He is medical director of five Boston-area "crisis pregnancy centers" that use ultrasounds to convince women not to have abortions. The centers, called A Woman's Concern, also emphasize abstinence and are participating in a campaign for the "Sanctity of Human Life Month." Keroack is also on the medical advisory council of the Abstinence Clearinghouse.
Okay, now......think.......if you were W, what would be the right national position for this man?
That's right! He's now the deputy assistant secretary for population affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services. Though it's not a high profile job, the post oversees the nation's family planning program, making sure low-income women get access to birth control.
Oh yeah, the post doesn't require any approval from Congress.
Hey, don't say George isn't listening to the voice of the people. That's why they all voted for his party last week. Didn't they?

Mike Tyson's got a new gig
Former boxer Mike Tyson has a great new gig: He has agreed to be a male escort at legendary Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss’ new legalized brothel (for female clients). Fleiss has bought 60 acres of land in Nevada and construction is scheduled to begin on "Heidi’s Stud Farm." She apparently has high hopes for Tyson, once heavyweight champion of the world, despite the teensy fact that he's a convicted rapist. Heidi says, "I told him, ‘You’re going to be my big stallion.’ "It’s every man’s fear that their girlfriend will go for Mike Tyson." Tyson adds, "I don’t care what any man says, it’s every man’s dream to please every woman -- and get paid for it."
Ow.
From MSNBC:
WICHITA, Kan. - A botched kidnapping ended with one of the assailants shooting himself in the groin, Wichita police said.
The man had just stuck the gun back into his waistband when it fired, shooting him in the left testicle. He cringed, causing the gun to fire again and strike him in the left calf.

Going through Lost withdrawal?
Lost is over until February 7th. Tonight, ABC is filling Lost's time slot with a new series, Day Break. (Think: Groundhog Day meets Die Hard) To keep Lost fans murmuring about the show, the network plans to air teasers from next year's episodes during the entire run of Day Break.
But, you don't have to watch Day Break because the 30-second clips will also be available on ABC's Lost webpage every Thursday... and probably all over the internet immediately after they air.
The network is also keeping the first six episodes of Lost available on its website for refreshers.
Additionally, the network has added a Lost wiki to the show's site, asking fans to contribute material on the show's characters and mythology, offer theories about what's going on and share their fan films, spoofs and other content. (There's also a link to the unofficial but exhaustive Lostpedia.)

Recent Flick Reviews
Did you enjoy Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? If so, go check out Stranger than Fiction. It's a new flick that's definitely reminiscent of those two. Not quite there, but in that vein. It's definitely not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it (3.5 Amys). It stars Will Farrell as a schlub who suddenly starts hearing someone narrate his life. Turns out his life is being composed by a famous author (Emma Thompson) - who always kills off her heroes. Great performances, including Will Farrell who was not annoying in that Jim Carrey I have to make a kooky face way. He was very low-key and believable. Emma Thompson is always great and Dustin Hoffman was very amusing as a literature professor that Will Farrell goes to for advice. I even got choked up at the end. Nice....
And Babel is also one of those not for everyone flicks....it was for me (3.5 Amys). It's non-linear so if you're the kind of person that just wants the story laid out for you, don't go to this one. There's actually three story lines that are related (eventually, although I found it really easy to figure out the relationships early one) but they take place at different times - they aren't in synch. Cinematography was great (probably a nom for this) and performances were strong. Brad Pitt looked haggard - wrinkles under his eyes, etc. which was nice to see (he wasn't all pretty boy which would have been incredibly inappropriate for the role) and Cate Blanchette was very good as his wife.
They are on vacation somewhere outside of Morocco and she is shot. The US gov't immediately assumes that this is a terrorist event and hilarity ensures (kidding. confusion and aggrevation ensures). The other two stories involve a family outside of Morocco and a Mexican woman watching two San Diego kids for the weekend - and decides to take them to Mexico for her son's wedding. It's a pretty heavy movie, but really well done for those who like to think about politics and motivation and Americans... Personally, I really liked it.

OJ's not a murderer, right?
What would we be without Fox tv? Without them, how would we manage? No midget dating shows? It's been a while since they've had a real "winner" though. But I think they've hit on something...
Remember the whole OJ thing? Did he or didn't he kill Nicole? Remember how he's dedicating the rest of his life to finding the real killer?
Well, for our entertainment, Fox got OJ to describe how he murdered Nicole —HYPOTHETICALLY. Not that he really killed her, mind you. But if he HAD, this is how he would have done it.
Check out a clip of the interview here, and tune in on Nov 27th and 29th for the two-part interview.

Rush Limbaugh does a quick turnaround
Here's an amazing quote from Rush Limbaugh yesterday:
"There have been a bunch of things going on in Congress, some of this legislation coming out of there that I have just cringed at, and it has been difficult coming in here, trying to make the case for it when the people who are supposedly in favor of it can't even make the case themselves - and to have to come in here and try to do their jobs."
Apparently his job is to support the Republicans even if he disagrees with them. Interesting...

Rainy Seattle
The previous record for rainfall on November 6th was .98 inches. Today, we've already got 1.11 inches as of 10:15 am. The one-day record is 5.02 inches. If we're going to get soaked, we may as well set a record. Go rain go!
Tech tip
Just learned about a site that will help prevent you from stumbling onto phishing websites. It also appears to speed up internet access (at least it did on my phone and they claim it does for all browsers...) The site's named opendns and they have nice, simple instructions for how to set your DNS servers to point to them instead of the default your ISP sets up for you.
For those of you who aren't geeky, every computer on the internet has a number assigned to it called an IP address. When you type in www.google.com, a DNS server converts that to the correct number for google and then your browser goes to that site. This all happens in the background.
These guys say that for various reasons, their DNS servers are more responsive, so the amount of time you wait to load a website is cut down significantly. More important, if you accidentally mistype a website address (which is common), instead of going to a website that's been set up to catch you when you type in the wrong address, the service will correct the address for you whenever possible. I tried typing in www.microsft.com and it properly corrected it to www.microsoft.com which was impressive.
Phishing is a real problem, where sites claim to be your bank or some other institution and they try to get you to give them information such as your social security number, bank account information, etc. It's a real problem and it's often very difficult to tell if you've stumbled on a phishing site.
I'm going to set my mom up with this DNS when I visit her at Thanksgiving. I recommend even my non-geek readers check this out. They do a good job of explaining how to set this up - you just need to do it one time. Let me know what your experiences are!

Seal Live
So, I went to go see Seal play the other night. I saw him a couple of years ago at the Hollywood Bowl with my friend Michel and we were extremely happy with the show. This man is a true performer. Oh yeah, and an amazing dancer.
So, I found someone willing to go with me to see him. The show was at a new "theatre" in Seattle. The word "theatre" has quotes around it cause it turns out it's at the convention center attached to the football stadium. Anyone who has been to a large corporate event knows how they set up a big stage and portable chairs and the big sound system, etc...well that's what they were calling a "theatre". For those of you who have been to Lotusphere's opening session, this was smaller!
The real scam is that they got Washington Mutual Bank to "own/sponsor" the theatre. Of course that meant that since it was opening night, there were a lot of bankers wandering around. Our seats were way up front (yay!) so we were surrounded by older men and women (yes, the older men here are married to older women - very different than Los Angeles...) in sports jackest and inappropiately sparkly clothing. (Did I mention the various ponchos? Ugly Betty appears to have a cult following.) Obviously they were not there to oogle Seal. Poseurs...
There was even an MC who introduced all the bankers to us. Fabulous!
Then they pulled the curtains to reveal "our Seattle Seahawks". I've been here long enough to know that they're the football team and that they made it to the Super Bowl last year. People were very excited about them.
Since Paul Allen (one of the original Microsoft founders) owns the football team and the stadium that the "theatre" was attached to, his band opened. Except Paul was sick. So, the warmup band was a cover band made up of old guys and none of them were zillionaires. I will say this about Paul Allen - that man is enjoying his money! I own the damn stadium, they have to watch me and my buddies play! Heh. I felt bad for poor Seal though. One of the Seahawks sang lead for a few songs and I have no idea who he was but he was rather adorable and did bring much needed energy to the stage.
By this time, I was in one of my ..."oh....I live in a small city..." moods. Instead of music industry folks in the front, there were toupees. There was a bad bad bad MC. There was a bar band opening up for Seal. We were in folding chairs in the middle of a conference center. Oddly enough, the Seahawks came and sat in the audience and they were sitting behind us...
Fortunately, Seal took the stage and waved people up to come stand and dance in front of the elderly (who tended to leave after a few songs.) He was great great great. His voice is beautiful, his songs and lyrics are really beautiful and have I mentioned that the man can dance?
There was a whoooo girl behind us who was screaming in my ear. She apologized for hitting me in the head, but honestly, that wasn't what she owed me the apology for. I think I'm still deaf in one ear thanks to her. But who cares? I appreciated the enthusiasm. At the end of the show he clasped his heart and threw all the love back out and us and I swooned and got a little teary. I'm pathetic.

Flags of Our Fathers & The Prestige
I didn't really expect to like Flags of Our Fathers. It's a war flick (strike one) directed by a Republican - Clint Eastwood (strike two?). I was concerned that it would hype folks up "for war" and quite frankly, I think that's the last thing we need right now. Turns out, I had nothing to fear.
It's about Iwo Jima and the guys that were in the famous photo . The battle footage was shot using hand held cameras, which is pretty much par for the course, but what was different was how he washed out the colors. I thought it was black & white and had to look to find color in the scenes. It's not horribly gory, but it is war, which in itself is pretty upsetting.
The men who were in that photo (and survived) were used by the government to sell war bonds. It's really their story and I found the story itself interesting and the movie very well done. I give this one four Amys.
I saw The Prestige today (which is magician movie of '06 #2). It's a shame that two magician movies came out this fall because they're both very good and totally different. (The other one was The Illusionist, FYI.) This one is about two rival magicians - these guys will stop at nothing. Story was interesting and even though I figured out several of the twists, there were still elements that surprised me. Performances were strong. Not Oscar worthy in my book, but this is a really great popcorn flick. Might get nominations for costumes or sets. I give this one three Amys.
Enjoy!

10 Worst Company URLs
Everyone knows that if you are going to operate a business in today’s world you need a domain name. It is advisable to look at the domain name selected as other see it and not just as you think it looks. Failure to do this may result in situations such as the following (legitimate) companies who deal in everyday humdrum products and services but clearly didn’t givetheir domain names enough consideration:
1. A site called ‘Who Represents’ where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… wait for it… is www.whorepresents.com
